Due to extreme poverty, neglect and abuse, many children in Ghana are forced to
leave their homes. These children live in the streets under harsh conditions.
The society also looks down upon them. Some children who have lost their parents
also choose to come to the streets and lead their lives with alms. This project
offers an opportunity for these street children to live and learn under one roof
until they are adopted or placed with family members who can take better care of
them.
In collaboration with local orphanages and day care centers in Ghana,
ARA provides volunteers who are willing to offer caring,
nurturing assistance to these impoverished children. Working in the orphanage
project in Ghana is a fulfilling deed in the life of any volunteer helping the
needy, desperate and destitute children spending 4/5 hours each day with
them.
| Project/Volunteer's Life:
|
|
As a volunteer in orphanage project, participants teach English (3-4 hours a
day) in either the orphanage or school (where kids go for day schooling).
Volunteers will also help kids to dress properly and reach school safely.
Volunteers may also organize games, art lessons, singing, dancing, as well as
other creative, educational and extra-curricular activities for the children.
This may include training groups in sports, teaching arts and crafts, organizing
inter-school football matches, playing music, as well as teaching subjects such
as mathematics, world affairs, hygiene, and nutrition. In the evening,
volunteers help the children complete their assignments, monitor academic
progress, and assure children complete next day's homework. Some participants
will assist in the care of the children who cannot yet attend school as well as
lend a hand through food distribution, kitchen work, and garden maintenance.

| Project Locations:

Working in orphanages or day care centers are
available options in various towns including Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast, with shops, banks & internet cafes nearby. Ghana's vibrant
cities are renowned for its friendly atmosphere where visitors are always
welcomed. It's full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern
infrastructure and most of the amenities you would expect from a city.
Volunteers can organize several combinations of potential excursions during and
after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure
already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: waterfalls,
monkey sanctuary, markets, purple princess designs, mountain biking, drumming
school, community based eco-tourism project, Volta river, Pottery village,
hotels, Kenta weaving studio and many more.
