You don't have to be a teacher to volunteer with ARA. The programme is open to all volunteers whether you are on a gap year, at university or wanting a career break. All we require is a good standard of spoken English. Ghanaian children grow up mainly exposed to their local languages, such as Ga, Twi and Ewe, etc but English remains the country's official uniting language, and is needed to communicate with fellow Ghanaians in education, business, and many other aspects of life.
As a volunteer you can therefore have a huge impact, arguably even more so than in a country that does not have English as its mother-tongue! Ghanaian schools are often understaffed and poorly resourced, but you can help to improve this situation by volunteering.
You can gain work experience teaching at primary or secondary schools in Ghana without TEFL or other formal teaching qualification is required. Whether you want to volunteer teaching during your gap year, career break or holiday you will have a role to play and your efforts will be greatly appreciated.

Volunteers will teach conversational English, Math, or Science to students
who are between the ages of 5 -10 in primary schools and 11-16 in junior
secondary schools. They will also read literature and improve the low
comprehension level and poor pronunciation of students, provide theoretical and
practical assistance and aide the teachers and interact with the students.
Typical day involves eating breakfast early morning and then going to teach the
students for the first half of the day. After lunch, volunteers will then help
other teachers in school and arrange extracurricular activities like games in
the school. Evenings and weekends are free time for the volunteer to experience
the immense culture of the cities.
Ghana has 3 academic semesters a year:
1st TERM:
Start Date: January 10 to April 12
School Holiday: April
13 to May 1
2nd TERM:
Start Date: May 2 to August 4
School Holiday: August 5 to
September 12
3rd TERM:
Start Date: September 13 to December 15
School Holiday:
December 16 to January 1
Note: These dates vary slightly from year to year. They also vary from
school to school and should be treated as approximate rather than
confirmed dates.
Volunteers can stay from a period of four
weeks to six months. Your stay can be extended beyond six months on a
case by case basis (depending upon the school's requirement).

| Skills and Qualification

There is no specific qualification for teaching project in Ghana except
fluency in English and a love for the children.

| Meals/Accommodations:
|
|
ARA manages room/food for volunteers. Volunteers live
with the host family and we manage a separate/shared, simple, clean and
modest room as well as local meals three times a day. Volunteer will also have
an access to our office in Ghana and mobile number of our coordinators. Our
staffs also visit volunteers in each 2-4 week interval as a part of the program.

English teaching opportunities are available in
various towns including Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast etc., with shops, banks & internet cafes nearby. Ghana's vibrant
cities are renowned for its friendly atmosphere where visitors are always
welcomed. It's full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern
infrastructure and most of the amenities you would expect from a city.
Volunteers can organize several combinations of potential excursions during
and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist
infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For
example: waterfalls, monkey sanctuary, markets, purple princess designs,
mountain biking, drumming school, community based eco-tourism project, Volta
river, Pottery village, hotels, Kenta weaving studio and many more.
