Do I need a specific qualification?
No special qualifications are necessary except that all volunteers should have
high motivation and lots of initiation to implement the objectives of the
project. Volunteers cannot be apprehensive about the work. You may need
communication skills beyond language, so be creative. Volunteers should be
motivated and ready for any kind of action.
Do I have to make a certain contribution?
Since ARA does not receive any external support or government subsidy,
volunteers are expected to support our programs by paying a participation fee
of 350 Euros per project per month to cover maintenance and general operational
expenses of ARA.
What do I have to bring with me?
Light travel is always the best way to travel. Don’t worry yourself and bring
huge bags! You can purchase basic necessities in Accra before departing for the project. All
volunteers are expected to inform ARA on arrival about all allergies and
illness so that necessary arrangements can be made for the project.
A backpack is far more practical than an overnight back. Clothes need to be
both practical and take into account local sensibilities. The coast is hot and
steamy year-round, while Accra
and the surrounding highlands get decidedly cool in the evening in July and
August. So you need to carry one decent warm pullover or fleece. A windproof
and waterproof jacket also comes in handy during the rain seasons. Furthermore
a sleeping back, a mosquito-net and toiletries are essentials. But don’t worry
too much! All these things are available in Accra as well.
Will somebody pick me up from the airport and
where will I stay then?
ARA staff meets volunteers on arrival at Kotoka International
Airport- and arrange for
their accommodation. Cost of taxi hire from airport, approximately 10 Euro is
met by the participant. Travel expenses and accommodation fee (10-15 Euro per
night including bed and breakfast) of before and after the workcamp are met by
the participant. For picking up, please let us know your arrival time and
flight number.
Do I need a visa for entering Ghana?
All Nationalities need a visa to enter Ghana. Please apply for a Tourist
Visa at your nearest Ghanaian Embassy.
Can I Arrive Early?
Those who wish to arrive early, e.g. for sightseeing, are advised to contact us
so that we can make arrangements arrange and provide a travel package.
What will I do after the workcamp?
Those wishing to do tours and safaris after camp are asked to inform us in
advance so that we make for them reservations. Other activities include visits
to children's homes, lectures and visits to schools in your area of profession,
but note these are not a must.
Is Africa
safe for me?
Ghana
is a safe and very secure country. ARA works closely with government
departments and the hostels or houses our visitors live in have 24 hour
security; we don't need escorts for international visitors, and our past
volunteers can bear witness with us. Please remember that when one country is
having conflicts in Africa (e.g., Congo,
Sudan, Somalia), that is not the whole of Africa; this is a hasty generalisation and a stereotype
that we have to overcome!!!
What shall I do with all my important
documents?
Make Copies! Important documents (passport data page and visa page, credit
cards, travel insurance policy, air/bus/train tickets, driving license etc)
should be photocopied before you leave home. Leave one copy with someone at
home and keep another with you, separate from the originals.
How can I get money in Ghana?
There are ATM’s in every bigger Town in Ghana, so Traveler Cheques are not
really necessary. Bringing your cash card with one or two Traveler Cheques (as
insurance) might be the best idea.
Do I need any vaccinations before coming to Ghana?
You may need a few vaccinations to enter Ghana, such as DTP, Hepatitis A and
B, Yellow Fever, Rabies, Tuberculosis and Malaria Medication. This depends on
your home country, so just consult your preferred medical practitioner at home.
Plan at least six weeks ahead for getting your vaccinations as some of them
require more than one injection, while some vaccinations should not be given
together.
